Gas outage cuts Gladeweater schools to short holiday

Gladewater students skipped classes Monday after Entex reported a broken main line cutting gas to the town. Gas was curtailed to large users while repairs were made and all students returned home. By Monday afternoon the line was repaired and schools were open Tuesday.

Welch sworn in for second term as Gregg County Sheriff

Sheriff Tom Hughes Welch began a new four year term on January 3 and faced a $100,000 federal civil suit filed January 5 naming him and two deputies. Welch oversees 44 staff with 36 officers, projects a $524,128 budget, and sees growth and crime challenges in Gregg County Texas.

Gladewater board approves McCreary and Huey for delinquent taxes

Gladewater trustees approve the Austin firm McCreary and Huey to collect delinquent taxes after auditor findings show a 10 percent rise. Tax assessor Bill Carroll cited 55 56 thousand dollars in delinquencies and discussed savings if Governor Briscoe’s 9 cent local fund assignment passes.

Annual banquet set Directors eye Chamber plans

Chamber of Commerce directors at their first 1977 luncheon elected two new directors to replace resignations. Gladewater Plans Fifth Annual Tasting Bee

Gladewater hosts its fifth annual tasting bee sponsored by the Municipal Hospital Auxiliary with 400 advance tickets at 2.75 each for Feb 24 in the First Baptist Church lower auditorium. Thirty recipes will be selected from 31 committees, with seven recipes per committee and three committees doubling to prepare three meats.

Trucker of the Year Honored for 1977 Olen Welk of Big Sandy

Olen Welk, a longtime trucker from Big Sandy and brother of Mrs. Polly Lybass, is named Trucker of the Year for 1977 by the American Trucking Association. He has logged over 3.5 million miles without a chargeable accident since starting in 1934. Welk, nicknamed Oleg, and his wife Hazel receive a trophy and diamond pin from Norbert Tiemann and plan to attend President Carter's inauguration after a Washington trip.
