Gladewater school board meets Monday night to hear a recommendation on delinquent tax collection and opens bids for two used buses. Also on the agenda are enrollment reports, an advisory conference on education, and an executive session to consider renewing Superintendent Roy Johnson's contract.
A roundup of bills includes HB180 banning pay toilets, HB229 barring directory assistance charges, HB217 shortening the school year from 180 to 171 days, HB300 creating a Metric System Advisory Council, HB312 requiring reading writing and math proficiency for advancement, HB313 changing pupil teacher ratios, HB301 mandating racial tolerance instruction, and HB185 raising the minimum wage from 1.25 to 2.30 per hour.

An autopsy on a baby found in the city dump on December 27 concluded the infant was stillborn. Texas Ranger Stuart Dowell said results received Friday showed the mother did not kill the baby after its Christmas birth. The body was in a plastic bag found by four boys scavenging scrap. probe continues.
SWEPCO announces a $101.9 million construction budget for 1977, with total five year outlay projected at $628.6 million for its 25,000 square mile service area in East Texas, Western Arkansas and Northwest Louisiana. The Wales Plant Welsh Unit One will supply 528,000 kilowatts and Unit Two is under construction.
A federal suit filed in Tyler names Gregg County Sheriff Tom Welch and deputies Robert Mumphrey and Joe Money as defendants. The case, brought by Lewis M. Terry and Imogene Terry, claims the shooting of Perry's Romeo Restaurant owner Terry and related injuries occurred during a 1979 incident after a burglary scare. The Terrys allege dispatcher instructions and deputy actions led to the leg wound and seek redress.
