Union Grove school superintendent Garland Ferguson reminds parents there will be no classes Friday January 14 as teachers observe a clerical day. Classes resume Monday at the regular time.

He argued bureaucracy has grown beyond electorate control, blaming industrial shifts and internationalism, and urged decentralization via Nixon era revenue sharing and grant consolidation. William Heard Ballard 78 died suddenly at his West Hendrix home Tuesday afternoon. Funeral services Friday at 10 in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Alan Manteutel officiating. Burial in Memorial Park. Survived by wife Helen. Resident of Gladewater four years after leaving Fort Worth. Retired chef WWI veteran and Worldwide Church of God member. Church members will serve as pallbearers.
Robert V. Sellers was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Cities Service Company on Monday, succeeding the late Charles S Mitchell. At 44, he has served as vice chairman since October 1971 and previously as vice president finance, a director and executive committee member since 1969.
The East Texas Chamber of Commerce World Trade Committee will sponsor a 22 day trade mission to England Austria Switzerland Holland Spain and Portugal departing April 27. Fred Pool will lead the trip with W R Crim Alf Jernigan and Roland Boyd arranging participation for East Texans and their wives.
Longview Mayor Lois K Jackson indicated in an interview she will announce candidacy for State Senator from District 2 on Feb 1. She joins Peyton McKnight and Gayle Ingram as announced contenders after Lindley Beckworth's exit. Jackson, first elected to Longview City Council in 1968, was mayor in April. District 2 covers Gregg, Smith, Upshur, Collin, Wood, Rains, Rockwall, Van Zandt and Hunt counties. She cited a warm reception in Collin County during a visit to McKinney, Plano and Allen.
A Texas plan to train over 700 special education teachers and related specialists will run June 1 onward in Austin Kerrville and six other sites. The program seeks 200000 in federal funds and was approved by the State Board of Education. It targets pupil appraisal materials teachers of the deaf physical education recreation workers and early childhood education specialists.
Gladewater school board at January meeting renews Roy Johnson's superintendent contract for July 1 1972 through June 1975. They accept kindergarten teacher Mary Jane Dedman’s resignation due to pregnancy and hire Madelyn Holloway Kennedy to fill the vacancy.
Chamber of Commerce President Royce Ford named Bill Langford to head the nominating committee for officers and directors. Other members include Joe Jones Jack Finley C O Bud Weiser and Mack Wiley. Remodeling at 215 N Main St nears completion with move possible in two weeks. Phase 2 posters will be available Jan 17 per OSHA IRS. Epoxy Chemical praised the chamber in a dedication. Supt Johnson noted the San Antonio school case impact and the Texas Education Agency approval for printing equipment and a quarter system beginning 1973-74. Gladewater will start 1972-73 curriculum planning.
