Humorist Bob Murphy Addresses East Texas Schoolmen

Nacogdoches attorney and East Texas humorist Bob Murphy spoke to the East Texas Schoolmen's Association at Gladewater High School, urging hard work and personal responsibility. He warned that many have quit trying in jobs and churches while praising those who rise above circumstances through effort and sacrifice.

Vocational Trade Classes Approved for Gladewater High

Gladewater High School will start vocational classes next September in auto mechanics building trades and printing. Supt. Roy Johnson received notice on Wednesday that the program, urged by the school board, has approval from John Gumple Assistant Commissioner of Vocational Agriculture Education in Austin. Classes will be three hours daily alongside the regular curriculum. The district plans a dedicated building to house the trades program to give students a post graduation option outside college.

Burglars Hit Baptist Church and Gay Ave School

Police report two burglaries over the weekend at Gay Avenue School and First Baptist Church. School losses total about 230 dollars for four record players and two teaching aids, while the church breach yielded about 10 dollars from an open office desk. Two 17 year old girls were found safe after being reported missing.

SEYE-OPENER SABINE SCHOOLS CLOSE FOR WEEKEND

Sabine schools dismissed Tuesday afternoon and will not resume until Monday March 3 due to many absentees. About 100 elementary and 40 high school students were reported absent Tuesday. Classes will start again at the regular time Monday. Memorial gifts in Ada L. Myers name were made to Greenway Baptist Church, East Texas Treatment Center, Scottish Rite Crippled Children’s Hospital, and others. D. R. Matthews of Southwestern Life was named Territorial Man of the Month for January in the Tyler region. Don Earp of Don’s Restaurant was elected first vice president of the East Texas Restaurant Association and nominated as a director of the state association. Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Ford's Prize Window Display Wins National Contest

Ford Office Supply Company of Gladewater won a national contest prize for a Christmas window titled The Twelve Days of Christmas. The display featured a pear tree partridge, 12 day artwork, and four decorative balls by the Ford daughters. A photographer from Gladewater Mirror praised the shot, earning a $50 cash award and towels for the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Royce Ford.
