Smith rites set Thursday
Funeral services for Walter Franklin Smith 84 of Union Grove are at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Rev Connie Winborn officiating. Burial follows at Gladewater Memorial Park. Smith died Tuesday at Mother Frances Hospital Tyler. He was born April 5 1890 in Tennessee and lived in Atlanta before moving to Union Grove 45 years ago. He was a World War I veteran and member of the American Legion Woodmen of the World. Survivors include his widow Mary a daughter Alma Culley of Longview a sister Ruth Allen of Kerrville and several nephews.

Death of E G Nelson longtime J C Penney manager
Everett G. Eddie Nelson died Tuesday after months of illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev Conrad Winhorn officiating. He served 32 years with J C Penney, retiring in 1973, and came to Gladewater in 1957 to manage the local store. He is survived by his wife Creta and his Iowa and Oklahoma relatives.

Phil Shipp Dies Rites Held In Gladewater
Phil C. Shipp 66 of Gladewater died Monday at Methodist Hospital Dallas after a short illness. Rites were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Quitman and Center Streets Church of Christ. Burial followed at West Mountain Cemetery. He was a WWII veteran, retired grocer and real estate agent, independent oil operator, and past president of the Gladewater Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his wife Alta and three daughters Jeanette Rickey, Phyllis Jones, and Claranne Moore, plus two grandsons and two sisters.

Rev. Ellsworth Harris dies at 79 in Gladewater
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. for the Rev. Ellsworth T. Harris 79 of Rt. 1 Gladewater who founded the Gladewater Nazarene Church and served 35 years in ministry. He died Saturday in a Gladewater hospital after a long illness. Survivors include his widow Mary Harris four daughters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pallbearers named.
