Prayer for Today asks God to help people respect others and work together in love. Saturday events at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo included calf certificates and yearlong training before next year’s show. East Texas Fair Association officers were elected at the Blackstone Hotel with Earl Andrews as president and Bob Murdoch as fair manager. Henderson named Joe Wylie Young Texan of the Year by the Optimist International. The rodeo program promises notable acts, including bull fighting, with last year’s crowds sold out and arena improvements planned.

Library Receives Texas Famous Trees Volume for Public Collection

The Gladewater Public Library gains Famous Trees of Texas published by the Texas Forest Service with support from the Moody Foundation. The book enhances the John Ben Shepperd Jr. Texana Memorial Collection and aids botany students and landowners with color photos maps and authoritative text by Haislet Anderson Keel Tucker and others.

Doc Reynolds Dies Sunday in Longview

Zurkle D. Doc Reynolds 56 died Sunday in a Longview hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Quitman and Center Street Church of Christ, with Murphy Phillips officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. Born April 28, 1914, in Upshur County, he lived in Gladewater and ran Premier Station on Highway 80 East. survived by wife Effie Faye, three sons, a daughter, four brothers, three sisters, and seven grandchildren.

Earl Forest Garton 83 of Gladewater Route 1 died Saturday after a long illness. Services at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chester Gleason and Rev. Ronnie Starr officiating. Burial in Rock Springs Cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, two brothers, four grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Pallbearers named.

Mrs. Dora Hilton Dies at 89 in Gladewater

Mrs Dora Alice Hilton 89 died Monday at a local hospital after 40 years residency in Gladewater. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev Herman Reagh officiating. Burial followed in Union Grove Cemetery. Survivors include three sons Rayburn Jack George and three daughters plus 26 grandchildren 49 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers listed.

Gladewater School Board Sets April Trustee Election

The Gladewater School Board announced the April trustee election for three seats with filing from Feb 23 to March 3 and absentee voting March 15 to 30. The board also renewed administrative contracts and discussed the 1971-72 calendar and district programs including special services and drug education.
