Six candidates file for city council race

Six candidates including four incumbents join the city council election contest. Mayor James Walker and Councilman James Goggans filed on February 2, with Roy Pynes on February 3 and Mayor Pro Tem George Thomas on Friday afternoon. Former councilman E. R. Pete McKain filed on Tuesday, and builder Bobby McPherson filed on Wednesday. More filings are anticipated before the March 2 deadline.

Robert Young Dies at 65 Rites Held Saturday

Robert Dickson Young 65 of 318 Taylor died Thursday after a long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Malcolm Stone Funeral Home chapel with Rev. B F Risinger Jr and Rev. Bob Brazil officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Park. Survivors include his widow Myrie, his mother Alice Dickson and six sisters. Pallbearers listed with alternates and honorary pallbearers noted for T E Mercer Trucking Co. employees.

Youths Held in Drug Store Burglary Case

Three Palestine youths arrested by Anderson County deputies in a case tied to a stolen pickup were returned to Gladewater on a warrant. They were arraigned by City Judge Jack Finley on burglary charges connected to Wyche Drugs, which was burglarized January 21 and involved a large quantity of drugs. Det Sgt Bill Brown and Gregg County deputy Gene Miller provided the details.

Free lunch program for seniors begins at Ellen Bauman center

The HUDCO funded hot lunch program will give free weekday meals to residents 60 and over, with Gladewater as the central prep site for Gregg County. Meals run 11 to 1, Monday through Friday, with open eligibility beyond Gregg County and a $1.25 meal for those who provide transport. Hiring is underway for cook, assistant cook, and bus driver as the project nears launch in about six weeks.

ETCOG approves plan for city sewer treatment plant

ETCOG approves the proposed sanitary sewer treatment plant and its environmental assessment. The city plans a 1.4 million dollar facility next to the current plant, serving 10 000 people for 20 years and funded 75 percent federal with 25 percent city match.
