Budget workshop highlights city pay raises and new equipment

City Manager Tony Williams outlined the 1978-79 budget needs during a workshop, urging a 15 percent pay rise across departments and upgrades including a police patrol car, fire apparatus, ambulances, and breathing units. Pace rites set Thursday for Effa Pace

Graveside services for Mrs Effa Cleora Pace will be Thursday at ten in Cannes City Cemetery with Rev. Austin Masterson officiating. Arrangements are by Malcolm Stone Funeral Home. The 94 year old widow died Tuesday morning after a long illness. She lived in Gladewater six years moving from Wichita Falls. She was a housewife and church member. She is survived by son Reed Pace daughter Lillian Hester Las Vegas grandchildren Grace Evans Janice Pace Betty Mansfield Dallas Marshall great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

United Fund elects Godfrey president and charts 1978 1980 board

At the annual United Fund meeting Marilyn Godfrey was elected president with Don Earp first vice president and B F Risinger second vice president. Molly Abercrombie received a farewell plaque for service as outgoing president. The drive raised over 18 000 a city record and about 2 500 above goal. Directors named include David Loyd Mack Wiley Tim Bland Mattie Cooksey Kirk Abercrombie Roy Johnson Don Earp Leon Grissom Bill Johnston for 1978 and subsequent years.

Political meeting set in Gladewater for city election slate

About 500 handbills advertised a political meeting at Cleo's Restaurant for February 2 to organize a group backing a slate of candidates in Gladewater city elections. Former Police Chief Jay Banks to serve as temporary chairman. four council terms expire this year. Mayors and councilmen discuss candidacy as elections on April 2 approach.

New Glade firm makes marble dust fixtures in Gladewater

Bassex Marble Manufacturing Company at 224 West Pacific Street begins operations in a former dry cleaning shop under Leon Mahoney. The plant makes cultured marble lavatories and bath items from marble dust mixed with resins. Mahoney says the products are tough, dent resistant, and marbling runs through the material. If expanded, output could reach 500 units monthly.

Funeral Rites Planned for Leon A Watson

Leon A Watson 62 died Monday after a long illness in a local hospital. Funeral services Thursday at 2 pm in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev William Ryan and Rev David Crosby officiating. Burial in Memorial Park. Survivors include widow Edwina three sons James Jerry Leon all of city three daughters Drueann Gottschalck Patricia Farmer Pam Watson nine grandchildren and three sisters Mae Jenkinson Velma Belt Olive Ryan.
