Eve opener John Beckworth announced the Key Club will sponsor a New Year’s Eve dance at the Legion Hut from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Jody Pearson and Bum Productions will provide the music. Admission is $2 per person with proceeds for a Key Club project. Glade Tennis and Swim Club hosts its annual holiday member guest doubles tourney Saturday and Sunday with men’s open doubles finals Sunday and women’s doubles concluding the same day. A city tree drive asks residents to leave Christmas trees for a brushing project to aid fish habitat by the lake. Congratulations to Mr. T. E. Robbins on his 95th birthday December 28.
Herr och Fru Axel Wahlquist of Linkoping Sweden and their daughter Elizabet visit Gladewater as Rotary host families. They tour East Texas with stops in New York and Washington, praise Americans as friendly and enjoy local shopping centers in Tyler and Longview.
Eight professional offices are under rapid construction in Gladewater. John Paul Tallent's building will house two doctors with the first arriving January, while Joe Jones's project will hold six offices when finished. Two Longview men attacked jailer W D Harrold during inmate intake at Gregg County jail. Deputy Joe Money shot John Michael Hill in the arm while Deputy Wilton Fair restrained Ricky Neibert. both attackers were captured and charged with attempted escape. Hill, held on armed robbery and fugitive charges, was hospitalized in good condition. Neibert faced theft charges. Jail officials praised the response minimizing injuries.
Funeral services for Julius Harold Shorty English, 64, were held Friday at 2 PM in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. Roy Alexander of Friendship Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed at Memorial Park. English, a Kilgore hospital patient, was a Sabine School bus driver and mechanic, a 32nd degree Mason, and a Baptist. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth, two daughters Barbara Mears and Dianne Wilder, six sisters, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
