Coal Operators Pessimistic Amid Energy Crisis in Pike County
In Pike County Kentucky small coal operators fear going out of business by next March as the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act deadline for permissible equipment approaches. Costs from taxes and higher worker compensation, plus stricter surface mining rules, threaten underground miners while large mines and surface operations fill the void. The area has seen mine counts drop from 750 in the 1960s to 295 by August 31 with about 4,121 workers, though annual coal output remains near 19 million tons.

Cedar Point & Lake Erie railway profits from tiny line
Emile A Legros and George A Roose report the Cedar Point & Lake Erie railway, a narrow gauge line only 1 percent mile long, hauled three million amusement park visitors in four months. It earned four times its 165000 cost, with six antique locomotives from diverse industries and a historic display. Four more are being restored or readied, about 25 coaches complete the fleet, and one locomotive features a solid mahogany cab.
