Live manger scene planned next week at St Mark's
A live nativity will be presented Wednesday on the Gay Avenue lawn between Live Oak and Holly by children and young people from St. Mark's Episcopal Church. The scene runs 6 to 7 p.m. with recorded music. characters include Mary Joseph shepherds angels and wise men. The setting uses hay supplied by J Pat Smith and authentic shepherds headdresses from Mrs F D Bell. Mrs Bell will also bring five animals. Candlelight Christmas Eve services are at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Arson suspected in Union Grove blaze
A $2000 reward is offered by Mr and Mrs Glyn Johnston for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those who set fire to their 1975 Chevrolet Camaro in Union Grove Upshur County. A 1975 Chrysler Cordoba nearby was not damaged though its interior was soaked with gasoline. Upshur County sheriff's office continues investigation.

Kilgore College will house a new oil field history museum sponsored by Placid Oil Company. The facility designed by Allen Buie and Associates features a theatre, working derrick, diorama, period shops, and interactive exhibits to educate visitors and Kilgore College students in Petroleum Engineering.

Lion escapes at Lion Country Safari in Gladewater
A pet lion broke its chain at Lion Country Safari in Gladewater around 5 52 p m on Wednesday and roamed across U S Highway 271. It killed two dogs and chased a car before Sgt Ken Garriott and owner Hawkins attempted to distract it. The lion crouched to spring and Garriott fired his shotgun fatally ending the pursuit.

Medal of Valor award honors officer kin in Longview
Longview police present the Medal of Valor to the widow of Officer Marshall Sowders Jr. and to his mother at the 21 year old ceremony. The event, led by Chief Roy Stone at Contessa Inn, also recognizes Gilmer Patrolman James Birtcher for his shootout actions and rewards other officers and a reporter at the department’s Christmas banquet.
