Longview chapter honors three Gregg County figures at annual Headliner Awards

The Longview Professional Chapter of Women in Communications presented the Headliner Awards honoring Gussie Nell Davis of Kilgore College Rangerettes, Margaret McLeod Estes of Longview News Company, and C Quentin Abernathy of First State Bank. Paul Crume of the Dallas Morning News spoke about women in newspapers and his 50 years in the field. Funeral services were held for William Allen Cooksey, 16, who died in a Highway 80 crash near Gladewater, with details of the accident and survivors. Other notes include community notices, student sports results, and local appeals for bed linens for the Hollands and baby clothes for the Mirror.

White Oak Bank Names New President and Directors

Jim N. Heath is named president of White Oak State Bank succeeding Tommy Moore, who had been in the role since the bank opened. Longview bankers Coy Jones and Rogers Pope join the board of directors. other directors remain, including H. E. Bingham and Edith Wilson. Heath's background includes timber work in Cass and Marion counties, a 1964 banking degree from the University of Texas, and prior directorship at the First National Bank of Athens. He and his wife Frieda have two children.

Richard Johnson Aims for Regional PPK Title

Ten year old Richard Johnson of Gladewater, a three year PPK veteran, will compete Sunday for the regional title at halftime of the Dallas Cowboys versus Washington Redskins game. If he wins, he advances toward the national finals during the Houston Super Bowl. Sponsored by the NFL and Ford, the event draws eight to thirteen year olds with local sponsors Davidson Ford Sales and the Gladewater Kiwanis Club. Richard and his parents attend a Dallas banquet Saturday night at the Mariott Motor Inn with other PPE contestants.
