Gladewater School Year Opens With Integration

Tuesday September 2 marks the first day of the 1969 70 Gladewater district for 1950 students across four schools. Full day classes begin at 8 am with bus service and cafeteria meals. Gay Avenue Primary dismisses at 2 45 pm Broadway Intermediate Middle and High School at 3 30 pm.

G W McClain Dies at 82 in Gladewater

George W. McClain 82, longtime Gladewater resident, died Wednesday at 5:25 pm. Funeral services were Friday at 2:30 pm at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home with Rev. Irby D. Bates officiating. Burial in Memorial Park. Survivors include wife Margaret. daughter Nadine Newell of Tyler. sister Mrs. Bill Stutsman of Peru Kansas. nephew H T McClain of Okmulgee Oklahoma. two granddaughters. He married in Sedan Kansas July 10 1910 and was a retired driller for L W Powell Co veteran of WWII and former commander of the local American Legion Post. Pallbearers were Rebuen Painter J B Poston Ben Fleenor Tom Erwin John T Moore and Pete McKain. honorary pallbearers were members of George Martin American Legion Post. Ladies Bowling League to organize Sept 3 at Glade Lanes.

Gladewater Board Adopts Student Appearance Rules

The Gladewater Public Schools board in April set rules on student dress and conduct and charged the principal and staff with enforcement. Hair length and sideburns for boys and a dress length limit for girls are specified to ensure neat appearance and proper behavior.

White Oak Post Office to Undergo Remodeling

Sen John Tower announced the Post Office Department awarded the remodeling contract to the White Oak Post Office. Estimated cost 15300 dollars with a 1792 square foot interior, 120 square foot platform, and 6942 square foot parking. Lease ten years with four five year renewals, annual rent 2985 dollars. Construction to complete between December 13 1969 and January 12 1970.

Asphalt Plant to Begin Operations in City

Ron Reed of Gregg Asphalt Company announced a new plant on city land behind the baseball park will start full operation on Tuesday September 2. The firm will supply hot mix asphalt to contractors and individuals and offer a cold mix product. The plant will employ about six workers and includes air pollution prevention devices.

Most Gladewater businesses close Monday September 1 for Labor Day. The Mirror office will close but will reopen Tuesday as usual.

Gladewater Officials Seek Planned Highway Panel Hearing

A Gladewater delegation led by Mayor Melvin Jenkins and city council members will address the Texas Highway Commission at 9 a.m. Wednesday October 1 in Austin. They will present the city’s plan to divide U S Highway 271 into one way streets Dean and Main and to link the eastern loop with U S Highways 80 and 271. The group requests the two segments of the Gladewater Highway Plan be started.
