Classes begin Monday August 23 at 8 a.m. with regular bus routes. Inservice for faculty runs August 16 to 20. New students may register August 19 with principals Glyn Johnston and J. E. Henderson. Cafeteria serves lunch on the first day.
A religious devotional expresses gratitude for the living God and salvation in Jesus Christ. It asks for forgiveness for being short in love and requests to be filled with divine love to better love others.
Randy Dawson, longtime Garrison band director of 10 years, is appointed White Oak High School band director replacing Ronald Ferguson who resigned Monday. Ferguson led the band to top honors in Winnipeg at the Manisphere Band Contest. Dawson earned bachelor and master degrees in music education from Stephen F. Austin State University and has five sweepstakes wins at Garrison.
Gladewater County Line In dependent School District board unanimously approved the $2,595,301 1976 77 budget at Monday night’s meeting. Superintendent Roy Johnson said debt service will be $207,918 and the district could legally incur up to $25 million. The board also rehired high school band director Don Ledbetter, hired five new staff members, approved low bids for groceries, and adopted the amended budget.
The Northeast Texas Health Systems Agency holds a Tuesday meeting in Marshall electing two former rivals to its executive committee and designating Marshall as a temporary headquarters. By-laws are revised to empower small rural hospitals. Officers are named for HEW approved future oversight and a 89 member board will ratify.
All Gay Avenue Elementary students must register Friday morning between 8 30 and 10 30 at the school. New students may register Thursday or Friday at the office from 8 a m to noon and 1 to 4 p m. Principal Charles Hopson urges parents to have correct lunch money to speed process.
Early Wednesday a youth burglarized Goodchild's Home Decorating Center on U.S. 80 three times. He first entered at about 2 a.m. by the front door, stole a calculator, and later returned to tamper with the adding machine and check writer. A cash box later found in the driveway. Police say clues point to the thief, investigation continuing.
The council plans a heavy agenda including a SWEPCO rate request review and a resolution to issue $100 000 of time warrants for Lake Gladewater road improvements. Plans call for 6 2 miles of frontage to be asphalted using city equipment and leased labor with no general revenue tax funds. Lot leasors will cover under 400 over three years. A public hearing is likely Sept 9. Also on the agenda are a six month hospital lease extension a subdivision ordinance discussion a budget request from the Gregg Harrison Mental Health Center and a request by Willie Smith of Greenway Village.
Chamber of Commerce directors voted to split the longtime Outstanding Citizen award into four honors Outstanding Man Outstanding Woman Outstanding Senior Citizen and Outstanding Youth. They also approved adopting UF summer youth program funding under chamber auspices and elected Julius Morse as second vice president. A planned night session was announced for Sept 14.
Gladewater school system will continue busing student body members to football games despite the cost and problems. Supt Roy Johnson urged serious consideration of stopping the service. He noted Gladewater is the only area school using buses for games and cited economic strain driver shortages and lighter supervision compared with organized groups.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2 PM in Croley Funeral Home chapel for Minnie M. Batla 67 of Gilmer who died Saturday in a Gilmer nursing home. Burial followed in Union Grove Cemetery. She was a Methodist with one sister Mamie Smith.
Three youths were hospitalized and four treated and released at Gladewater Municipal Hospital after a two car collision three miles north of U S 80 on FM 2659 near Hawkins. Lucretia McDonald 16 Michael Moss 4 Connie Kilpatrick 14 suffered injuries. Kilpatrick had a broken rib and punctured lung.
Mrs. Wendell Chronister was moved to John Sealy Hospital Galveston last week following another surgery. Her condition remains unchanged. Friends are collecting donations in her name at First State Bank to help with medical costs as she remains hospitalized over two months without insurance. For sale Calico kittens call 845 4352. Ella Mae Lewis 70 of 2005 Pinecrest died at 11 40 a m Tuesday after a long illness. Funeral services set for 2 p m Thursday at the First Christian Church with Rev. Chester Gleason and Rev. LaVern Rudolph officiating. Burial will be in Gladewater Memorial Park. Survivors include three daughters Mrs LaQuita Cagle Mesquite Mrs Virginia Daniel Henderson and Mrs Linda Ashcraft Jackson Miss a sister Mrs J W Hall Olney a brother W H Wells Wichita Falls nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
