City Manager Tony Williams and City Secretary Rick Kuehler announced final payments on two 1952 general obligation bond issues. One bond issued for 700000 funded water filtration and sewer work. another for 100000 funded street improvements. Final payments were 71255 and 10175 respectively.
UG residents seek city status in Upshur County with an August 10 ballot at Fortson's Equipment Rentals. 28 signatures support the move. election judge Garland Smith will oversee the vote offering Corporation or No Corporation. Union Grove has about 270 people and the action ties into a dispute over Gladewater’s extraterritorial jurisdiction and annexation efforts nearby.
Beth Smith returns home recovering well from major surgery and may host guests. Chief Jimmy Davis says a new city speed radar unit will go operational Thursday and urges strict speed limit observance as school opens soon. Joel Smith in room 9024 at M D Anderson Hospital Houston is reported doing fine after surgery.
Chamber of Commerce directors met at Ellen Bauman Senior Citizens Center. They voted to permanently employ Mrs Delanna Kimbley as chamber secretary and to consider Walter Nelson for chamber manager as by laws interpretation continues. A plaque and special resolution honor B P Dake, and the main chamber assembly room will be named the B P Dake Room.

Kilgore unveils a new Wayne Vanguard ambulance costing 15732.50 funded by city revenue sharing. It replaces a 1973 model while a standby unit with Jaws of Life remains in service. Fire Chief Gothard notes all three units stay ready, with 396 ambulance runs since January 1.
Dr Bailey Marshall and John RK White, both native Gladeites, receive key appointments. White becomes Carthage postmaster effective July 30 with a $22,225 salary and 13 staff in a post office handling about $259,595 annual receipts. Marshall is named UIL director in Austin effective Sept. 1, after teaching and coaching in Gladewater White Oak and Lockhart.
