A PTA unit will be formed for the Middle School. Parents of students entering the school next fall are invited to a meeting in the high school cafeteria at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Officers will be elected and PTA by-laws adopted.
Four Gladewater school teachers with 119 total classroom years were honored at the Tex as State Teachers Association all faculty breakfast at GHS Cafeteria. Officers for 1969-70 were elected by acclamation: Paul King president Loretta Day first vice president Garfield Hill second vice president Audrey Froneberger secretary treasurer. Retirements included Miss Presnell Heard and Fisher. Service pins ranged from 5 to 25 years.
Verlie Kathryn Baillie Smith of Gladewater dies at 55 after a week in a local hospital. Funeral Thursday at 10 a.m. at North Main and Gay Church of Christ. Burial in Rock Springs Cemetery. Survived by husband Joel, five daughters, two sons, four brothers, two sisters, 26 grandchildren. Mrs. Smith wrote a genealogy column for the Gladewater Mirror and Gilmer Mirror and with her husband operated Gladewater Memorials.
The city council approved an amendment to the electric service rate ordinance adding an experimental rider for underground distribution in subdivisions of 10 or more lots and similar housing. A $1 monthly charge was authorized to compensate the utility for underground facilities.
Paris Art Gallery in Paris presents a closing-season exhibit of Randy Jeter’s art from 1966 to 1969. Jeter, a Longview native teaching elementary art in Gladewater, shows growth across years. An open house Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. invites the public to meet him and view the works at the Nathan Bell Real Estate Building five blocks west of downtown Paris.
Word reached here around two o'clock Wednesday of the death of Mrs. Mary Beth Crouch at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Beaumont. Funeral arrangements were not known at press time. Mrs. Crouch fell ill while visiting Beaumont. Jeter, a regional art teacher, studied in Mexico and with John Martin in California. He taught in Louisiana for a year before joining the Gladewater public schools for four years. His notable exhibits include the Dallas Museum Southwest Print and Drawing Show and Beaumont Annuals.
The Union Grove Board of Education reorganized Tuesday night naming Mason Phillips president M M Shelley Vice president and T E Johnson Jr secretary Other members include Raybert McCrary C D Speed Bruce Watts and Wayne Wilson Johnson and Watts sworn in by County Supt Norman Tuel The board discussed underground cable installation and distribution facilities and a budgeted pay raise for Fire Chief Potts move from city apartment. A sewer bond funding update and planned Clarksville City coordination were also noted.
James Vernon Robinson aged 60, White Oak mayor and civic leader, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning in a Longview hospital while recovering from surgery. Cause undetermined at press time. Funeral arrangements with Welch Funeral Home. Survived by widow Enza. He served as District Superintendent of McAllister Fuel Oil Co and as White Oak city council member and mayor.
Cub Packs 190 and 196 hold a Pinewood Derby at 7 30 Thursday night at First Methodist Church. Daleth Study Club hosts a Spring Tea Thursday May 1 at 2 30 p m in Jeter Hall, First Methodist Church. reservations by April 29 with Mrs Grady Parrish. Also covered are a rummage sale by Gay Avenue PTA, a Vocational Nurses meeting with Dr A C Stevens on chest surgery, and charter buses to Shreveport Battle of the Bands. Jo Nell Potts has left intensive care after major surgery at Good Shepherd Hospital Longview. visitors may come Thursday. Paul C Burnett returns home for 30 days.
