Upshur officials hear Glade case over rural fire aid

Upshur County commissioners hear City of Gladewater request for financial help in rural fire protection. Williams cites 79 calls outside city limits in 1975 and a $536.85 hourly rate. county funds unlikely, with judge noting 1975 payouts and 1976 increases but no funds to meet the request. The meeting also heard from the Upshur Firemen's Association.

Reserve officers ceremonies set

The reserve police officers training course class of 76 will graduate and receive state certificates on Thursday April 29 at Wyatt's Cafeteria. Gregg County District Attorney Odis Hill will be guest speaker. Trainees hail from Marshall Ore City Longview and Gladewater. The 72 hour course is the first ever conducted here and is sponsored by the Gladewater police department and Gregg County sheriff's office.

Chamber banquet tickets on sale for April 23 event

Chamber directors announced ticket sales for the annual membership banquet to be held Friday April 23 at 7 p.m. in the GHS cafeteria. Tickets cost 6 with 300 available. Purchases: First State Bank, Chamber office, and from president elect Jack Earp. Dr. Harry Hardwick will give the principal address and awards will include the Bradley Award and Gladewater Citizen of the Year.

Starving artist sticks to career

Longview boxer turned sculptor Ron Cummings, a geologist by training, works from a home studio at 1201 Annette. He describes sculpture as costly and demanding, learned at Castleberry Art Foundry in Weatherford, with bronze casting costing up to 2000 dollars.

Funeral services for Mrs Vannie Williams in Gilmer

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Croley Funeral Chapel Gilmer for 81 year old Mrs Vannie Williams a lifelong Upshur County resident. Rev J W Best and Rev J A Allen officiated. Interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. She died Monday night in a Gilmer hospital after a brief illness. She is survived by two sons Leslie Alton Williams city and Garland Ray Williams White Oak a daughter Rena Mae Stevenson city two brothers Claude Steelman city and Doyle Steelman Dallas six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

League needs more uniforms for young baseball players

The 9 and 10 year old league faces a uniform shortage as participation rises. Teams average 15 uniforms but rosters hold 18 players each this season. Sponsors are urged to call Doss Hunt Jr. to fund uniforms. if none are found players may play in jeans.

Reunion of Gladewater High School grads planned

The Gladewater Bicentennial Commission sponsors a May 29 30 reunion for all classes from Gladewater School. Mrs Mildred Barker chairs the early classes and called a meeting April 12 at the Chamber of Commerce. Attendees will gather May 29 from 1 to 5 pm with refreshments and donations requested via treasurer Exa Mae Shipp.

First car wash to fund Fourth of July fireworks

The first car wash to raise funds for Fourth of July fireworks will be held Saturday. Tickets cost 150 dollars and are available at Yvonne's Cards and Gifts or at wash time. Lloyd Matthews donated the use of his car wash on Lake Drive for the fundraiser.

Area II One Act winners advance to regional Arlington

Gladewater and White Oak win top honors at the Area II I UIL One-Act Play contest held at Henderson County Junior College Athens. Gladewater earns multiple individual awards while White Oak advances with its Noel Coward piece. The two district 14 AA entries move on to regional competition in Arlington April 23-24.

Women’s Division Gives Support to Bicentennial Committee

A preservation effort receives a 250 dollar donation from the women’s division for incidental expenses. Earlier gifts of 100 and 400 were added to fund a “women’s block” along the railroad and beautification costs are estimated at 500 per block. The committee plans a Bicentennial history book and microfilmed newspaper archives for public access.
