UF budget approved by United Fund directors at chamber meeting

Officers and directors allocated sixteen agencies funds from the past drive totaling 17,150 dollars. Mrs. Molly Abercrombie led the budget session. others present included Mrs. Wilson Godfrey Don Earp Jo Wiley and Mrs l Shepherd and Norbert Mackey with community reps from Mirror. Checks will be issued this week with allocations to many groups including Summer Youth Program Red Cross East Texas Treatment Center and Boys Baseball.

Car Washes Aid Fireworks Fund in Gladewater

Lloyd Matthews offers his car wash free of charge to the Bicentennial Fourth of July celebration committee. Molly Abercrombie chairs the effort seeking volunteers from Sunday School groups and Boy Scouts to run Saturdays. Tickets $1.50 available at Yvonne's Cards and Gifts or pay at the car wash. opening hoped by April 17. Volunteers may leave names at Yvonne's or write Fireworks PO Box 1468.

Clarksville voters re elected one incumbent and one new alderman to the city board. R O Shaw was re elected with 52 votes and Weimar Jones won a first term with 49 votes. Other candidates were B G Allen 11 John G Linder 10 and Ray Martin 5 for a total of Th votes cast.

Lions Club creates new church softball field at Gay Avenue

The Lions Club finances a new home field on Gay Avenue Elementary property for Gladewater church teams. Games start May 15 with two daily night contests through mid July, using daylight lighting and a fenced backstop. Park will belong to the school and may become a future high school baseball venue.

Kiwanis Blood Drive Set for First Methodist Lot

Gladewater Band Boosters Plan New Orleans Trip

The Gladewater Band Boosters Club approves a trip for band members to New Orleans with a GHS concert in Jackson Square. Students will raise funds to offset trip costs, and several projects are under consideration. Tickets for the spring concert will be sold during the first week of May to coincide with the middle school band concert. Mrs Margaret Sims presided at the Tuesday meeting.

City to Swear In 3 Council Members and Elect Mayor

At the April regular meeting city attorney Ernest Martin will administer the oath to the three councilmen elected in Saturday’s balloting. He will then conduct the mayoral election and a mayor pro tem will be chosen. The agenda includes reappointing city officials Tony Williams manager Jack Finley city judge Ernest Martin city attorney and Rick Kuehler finance director city secretary. The council will consider a depository designation and check signing authorization and the reappointment of Gus Davis Auditing Firm. Bids will be opened for a new police car and a $4564 payment to B L Nelson for engineering services.

Gladewater Residents Reelect Incumbents and Elect Racial Milestone

In Gladewater and kKee City, voters backed two incumbent city councilmen, electing Lonnie Van Zandt as the first Black official in city government. Arm strong and Hopson won council seats. Van Zandt led with 387 votes. School board races saw Medro Barnes and Virgil Wallace reappear, with Barnes unopposed on the board.

Gladewater Chamber of Commerce sponsors ribbon cuttings for Ben Franklin and Nu-Way Oil Co. Thursday and Friday. Ben Franklin marks move to a new 6000 square foot store with expanded departments and new radio electronics stock. Nu-Way Oil opens a new facility with extended hours. Prizes include a Galveston trip and bikes, plus a CB radio giveaway May 1.

Union Grove incumbents win reelection to school board

In Union Grove a heavy turnout on Saturday re elected three school board members Mason Phillips Shelton and J A Tuttle. The three winners received 128 124 and 123 votes while four challengers Henry Pepper Gerald Crunden Charles F Glenn and Allen Jackson trailed with 82 82 77 and unknown totals in a total 220 votes cast.

Gladewater school awards ag building contract to low bidder

Gladewater school board awarded the vocational agriculture building contract to C. & G. Construction of Rockwall for 126 621 dollars with 200 day completion. Other bids ranged from 134 910 to 172 088 with time frames from 120 to 180 days.

William F Fletcher 78 rites held in Gladewater

Funeral services for William Franklin Fletcher 78 were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel. He died Monday evening in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Surviving are his widow Lillie Pauline Fletcher three sons S A Fletcher R L Fletcher and M G Fletcher a brother H O Fletcher a sister Velma Owens five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Grandsons James Goggans served as pallbearers.

Bentsen pushes pause on post office closures

Senator Lloyd Bentsen urged that any new federal aid to the U S Postal Service include a two to three year ban on post office closings. He wrote to Senator Gale McGee after Postmaster General Bailor testified that further cuts would follow unless Congress acts in two to four months.

City seeks county funds for fire protection aid

Gladewater asks Upshur Gregg and Smith Counties to reimburse fire protection outside city limits. City Manager Tony Williams and Fire Chief Ronnie Gothard will push for county payments, rejecting a $50 monthly offer as inadequate. Figures show rising costs for 1974 and 1975 with 35 and 79 calls outside municipal boundaries.
