Gladewater July 4 Fireworks Fund Struggles With Shortfall

Molly Abercrombie chairs the Gladewater Bicentennial fireworks committee facing a roughly 1500 dollar goal for the display. A professional shooter would raise costs to about 2000 dollars and volunteers describe little progress from recent fundraisers. Donations can be sent to Fireworks, P.O. Box 1468, Gladewater, or left at Yvonne's Gift Shop.

Gladewater cemetery bans artificial flowers during peak season

City manager Tony Williams reminds residents of Gladewater Memorial Park Cemetery that artificial flowers and tributes are not allowed from perl through Oct 9 to ease mowing and upkeep. Cut flowers in approved vases are allowed in warm months. Copies of the rules are available at City Hall.

Sewer System Smoke Test Planned by City

On Monday April 5 a four person crew with a supervising engineer will test the sanitary sewer system using harmless smoke. Smoke bombs will be placed in sewer manholes and forced through lines to reveal cracks or breaks. The process is safe, non toxic and will not stain clothing. City Manager Tony N Williams announced all system sections will be tested within two months.

Funeral services for ILF Elkins 65 of Union Grove were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev David Crosby officiating. Interment followed in Union Grove Cemetery. Elkins died Thursday at 12:30 p.m. He was born February 16, 1911 in Tennessee and was a woodcraftsman. He is survived by his wife Lura a step son Bob Parrot Houston a step father Everett Elkins Houston two half brothers Hugh Elkins Houston Floyd Elkins Lufkin three sisters and one brother. Non-sewer doll therapy aid by Eva Welch at East Texas Chest Hospital

Eva Welch, a Warren resident, makes decorative dolls during an 86 day hospital stay at East Texas Chest Hospital Inter. She sewed before but now crafts dolls as therapy, dressing purchased dolls and finishing one per day. She has given away about 40 dolls to date.

Gladewater to host tennis tournament this April

Gladewater High School will host the District 14 AA tennis tournament next Monday April 5 starting at 8 a.m. at the Glade Tennis and Swim Club with finals planned the same day and some matches on school courts. Gladewater housing committee will meet Tuesday April 6 at 7 p.m. at city hall to outline the year’s work with the city council builders and developers invited. FHA VA FmHA and conventional loan programs will be discussed in depth and the public is invited.

Case clears up crime decline in city March report

Police Chief Jay Banks announced a 20 percent case clearance rate, up 15 points from last year, with the crime rate also down. The March report includes juvenile activity, armed robberies dropping to one, burglaries rising to 9, vehicle thefts totaling one, and total property stolen at $5,944.39 for March and $18,771.39 year to date.

Funeral services for John B Ward longtime Gladewater resident were held at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with a Mass at St Theresa's Church. Ward 62 born Philadelphia Pa lived in Gladewater since 1946 served Texaco Oil Co Longview WWI veteran and active in American Legion Jaycees Chamber of Commerce Gladewater Round-up Knights of Columbus and other civic roles.

Play Goes On Infancy Wins District Honors at Kilgore

Thornton Wiler’s Infancy from Gladewater High School tied for top honors with White Oak High in the District 14-AA One Act Play contest at Kilgore College. Anthony Williams played the baby Moe and earned best actor. Laura Louvier and Brian Hudspeth made the all-star cast. White Oak’s Niane Dunnell won best actress for Blithe Spirit condensation.
