Fire ant control pesticide eyed by several states
The article notes a pesticide combining mirex and corncob grits effective against fire ant mounds. After 13 years of study it would be sprayed by airplane to reduce mound populations of about 100,000 ants per colony. The Agriculture Department says environmental impact is minimal and livestock pastures face ongoing infestations seeding millions of acres annually.
