Gladewater centennial banquet honors Weiser and Dake

John Ben Shepperd recalls area history as Gladewater marks its centennial. Late C O Weiser named Citizen of the Year posthumously. B P Dake receives the Bradley Award for leadership. About 450 attendees at the GHS gym heard Shepperd praise the chamber and the library gift from Mrs. Claud Lee.

Ben F Adams 81 dies after heart attack in local hospital

Ben F Adams aged 81 died Friday at 6 am in a local hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 pm at the Quitman and Center Street Church of Christ with Eugene Greer officiating. Burial was in Gladewater Memorial Park. He was a retired cattleman and farmer, married to Nannie Lee, and resided at 801 North Tenery. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 852 and the Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, a son Jack Adams of Dallas, two daughters Helen Thomas of the city and Jo Nell McCullin of Beaumont, two sisters Pearl McCullough of the city and Ethel Wilson of West Mountain, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

City election set Tuesday with five candidates for council

Absentee balloting ended Friday at 5 p.m. with March 30 election day set for Tuesday April 2. City officials expect light turnout. Five candidates compete for four council seats. incumbents George Thomas James Walker and Melvin Jenkins seek reelection. J B Poston not running. Newcomers James Goggans and Johnnie Gregory seek first terms. Polls open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at city hall fire department. Election Judge Wilson Godfrey.

White Oak Church Destroyed By Morning Fire

Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the three year old White Oak Methodist Church in a remodeling project. Estimated damage about 80000 dollars. Alarm at 1030 a.m. White Oak volunteers and five Longview units fought the blaze two hours. Pastor Rev Mervin Scott said insurance only partially covers the loss.

Gladewater Centennial Meeting Seeks Community Involvement

A townwide meeting in Gladewater set for Tuesday at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium invites all residents to join the Centennial preparations. The Rogers Company will assist, outlining roles in committees and booster clubs to ensure broad participation and future civic engagement.

Gladewater Public Library marks its second Centennial exhibit with school life memorabilia including photos stories and a razor strap once used to whip students. Garland Ferguson chairs the showing with open house 1 to 4 p m Sunday and runs through Thursday featuring many visitors seen in older pictures.

San Augustine coaches Henry Whittlesey and Warren Norvell were honored speakers at Union Grove High School annual all sports banquet in Longview. Jimmy Cox named most athletic boy. Jeanne Richardson best girl. Special guest Floyd Odom and his wife attended.
