Ida Veronica Simonson, the sought after witness in the Thaw murder trial, arrived in Pittsburg yesterday from an alleged Africa assignment. Rumors place her in Paris or McKeesport rather than any fixed location while authorities and Detective Roger O’Mare remain unconcerned about her potential testimony.
The Georgetown to Marion railroad is advancing with four miles laid on the Marion county side from Allison's landing. A trestle spans into the lake and logs are hauled for floating to Georgetown. The line will join the existing Marion to Lumberton route. On the Williamsburg side the track reaches Johnsonville, enabling future train travel from Georgetown and Marion.
Calvin Westmoreland a white man fifty years old was arrested in a tobacco warehouse in Raleigh on charges of being an escaped convict from the North Carolina penitentiary He had spent twenty years at large including ten years in Salem He was convicted in Stokes County in February 1885 for stealing and sentenced to three years hard labor He later helped build the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway and escaped January 17 1887 with three other convicts His wife plans to appeal to Gov Glenn for a conditional pardon.
Dresdeim October 6 Fraulen Grete Bayer daughter of the late Burgomaster Brand is arrested for murdering her fiance, a Chemnitz engineer, to obtain a £500 engagement fortune. The engineer was found dead May 14 after she lured him blindfolded, joking about a surprise, then forced a revolver into his mouth and shot him.
