Woman Dies After Fulton Street Shooting in Brooklyn
Rose Raportello is dying in a hospital after a Fulton street shooting in Brooklyn. He says the woman fired first as he neared a barber shop, he wrestled the pistol and it discharged striking her heart. Witnesses say he then shot her deliberately. Raportello, 26, once lived in Brooklyn then Norfolk, Virginia.

Rainbow seen at sea by Trans-Atlantic travelers
The Minnehaha arriving from London carried a tale of a rainbow seen at night. Captain Robinson and about a score of passengers testified to the phenomenon. H W Scoville of Newburyport said it appeared near midnight after showers and a mist rolled over the water. The half circle of colored light touched the sea and persisted about twenty minutes before fading.

Miser Merrick Found Starving in Kenosha Home
Lander E. Merrick, who amassed over 350000 in cash and securities after a 50 year miserly life, died at the home of strangers in Kenosha. He arrived in Randall in 1840 and two years ago officials found him nearly starved, a guardian was appointed, and his property was seized. George W. Eldridge, former state senator and nephew, will receive a portion of the estate.

Lincoln aides man paralyzed after assassination night
Washington October 2 Joseph Shelton one of the policemen on duty at Ford's Theatre during President Lincoln's assassination was stricken with paralysis today and not expected to live. Shelton accompanied Lincoln to Ford's Theatre and helped carry the wounded President across the street where he died. He was attached to the White House in those days. The Fourth Division will attend the smoker tonight in blue uniform with leggings.

In Vicksburg Mississippi on October 1 a planned gag involved Teddy Bears peeking from behind trees along a hunting track to surprise President Roosevelt. Secret Service agents halted the plan stating they could not share the humor and prevented the joke despite Mississippi organizers procuring many gross of the bears.
