Arson Charge Placed After Campobello Fire Kills Four

Campobello May 15 Following an inquiry by State Insurance Inspector B A Wharton into the January 28 blaze that destroyed W J Gibsons home and killed four Gibson children, Allendar Gosnell 25 has been arrested in Landrum on arson charges The tragedy shocked the community and investigators found sufficient evidence to detain Gosnell a former tenant on the Gibson plantation The Gibson family included Hugh 16 Annie Thomas 14 Laura 10 and James 8 The fire broke out at 1 am as neighbors heard screams and Belton Reid heroically helped rescue one child The origin of the fire remained undetermined with coal from a grate considered a possible cause

Anarchists Roughly Treated in California

Emma Goldman anarchist lecturer and Ben L. Reitman manager are safe in Los Angeles after an attack in San Diego. Reitman was seized by armed vigilants from a hotel, tarred and feathered, burned with a cigar, stripped of clothes, and left with only money and a ticket. Goldman was escorted to the rail station as she abandoned a planned lecture.

Hendersonville North Carolina May 16 grand jury returns indictments for first degree murder against Nort Britt and Lizzie Shaft two Asheville women in the Myrtle Hawkins death case.
