The county faces August primaries with seven offices up for election including Sheriff Auditor Treasurer Supervisor Coroner and three Representatives. No official slate yet but candidates are deemed capable and a heated race looms. The Jones and Blease issue will shape the county campaign as parties settle differences at the ballot box.
Reports from May 15 describe a crevasse on the west bank of the Mississippi River near Hymel plantation about 30 miles above New Orleans. The breach, over 500 feet wide, sent floodwaters toward dense farming country with hundreds fleeing toward levees as several small towns were inundated. The Hymelia break is the third on the west Louisiana levees and threatens the most fertile zone south of the breach.
An old period ad touts Electric Bitters as a remedy for malaria and fever symptoms. It asserts the product kills malaria germs, cleanses the blood, restores appetite, and strengthens the body, with a testimonial from WM. Fretwell of Lacma N.C. claiming three bottles cured his malaria and health returned. Priced 50 cents at druggists.
A Clemson College botanist argues sanitation as the key to preventing plant diseases. Prompt removal and burning of diseased plants and parts stops disease spread in tomatoes cabbages and other crops. Preventive measures include cleaning tools and equipment, disposing of infected fruit, and burning all diseased tissue to protect adjacent soil and lands.
A series of notices announces candidates for local offices including County Supervisor Coroner Treasurer Sheriff and Auditor in Georgetown County. Each pledge to uphold primary rules, serve to best ability, and accept primary outcomes with endorsements from stated supporters.
