Massive Mississippi River Levee Breach Weathers New Orleans Area

Reports from May 15 describe a crevasse on the west bank of the Mississippi River near Hymel plantation about 30 miles above New Orleans. The breach, over 500 feet wide, sent floodwaters toward dense farming country with hundreds fleeing toward levees as several small towns were inundated. The Hymelia break is the third on the west Louisiana levees and threatens the most fertile zone south of the breach.

Prompt removal and burning of diseased plants and parts stops disease spread in tomatoes cabbages and other crops. Preventive measures include cleaning tools and equipment, disposing of infected fruit, and burning all diseased tissue to protect adjacent soil and lands.
