Prominent Barrister J J Hucks Dies After Illness

J Jenkins Hucks aged 69 dies at home after three days of illness. A leading local lawyer and former city official, he leaves a wife two sons Dr H M Hucks and Frank N Hucks and daughter Miss Marie F. Funeral held at the Episcopal church with Dean Robottom officiating. interment in Episcopal cemetery. Pallbearers listed. Born 1842 near McClellanville, he served in Hampton's Legion and practiced law about 43 years.

One Dead in Jacksonville pistol duel

In Jacksonville on May 11 W C Vaughan a prominent lawyer was killed and Charles H Johnson a tinsmith fatally wounded in Vaughan s office after a debt dispute. Vaughan fired five shots after being shot through the heart while Johnson fired four. Vaughan died at the steps soon after. Johnson lay unconscious in the doorway and is not expected to regain consciousness.
