Joseph N Alphonse, 54, a Charleston native and long-time Georgetown paper hanger and painter, died suddenly of acute indigestion last night at his residence. He was last at work at 5 pm, returned home ill, and his body was taken to Charleston for interment by his brother C J Alphonse and family. He leaves his wife, two daughters and two sons. A devoted husband, father, and member of the Woodmen of the World and Red Men, his loss is mourned by the community.
Hemery, driving a Fiat equipped with Michelin Tires, was the sole finisher within the allotted time in the Grand Prize Automobile Race on July 23 at Circuit de Sarthe France. The event drew large crowds and tested engines and tires under intense heat, heightening endurance stakes.

Cheraw July 25. After an attempted assault on a young woman in Mount Croghan, a North Carolina negro, name unknown, is believed lynched. Frantic searches continued all day and into last night as locals scoured woods for the culprit. The victim is a prominent local young woman. Sheriff Douglas of Chesterfield County aided efforts, but the suspect was not captured.
Clarence Burton, eighteen, son of George and Laura Burton of Borden Mine near Frostburg, is jailed over the poisoning death of Bertha Evans, seventeen, daughter of Frederick Evans, who fell ill at Burton home and died at Mount Savage. Bertha's ante mortem statement says a bichloride of mercury tablet given by Mrs. Burton. coroner's inquest set for Wednesday with possible more arrests and hints of unusual domestic conditions at the Burton home.

Jerry Moore the champion boy farmer of the world who produced over 228 bushels of corn on an acre may accompany the South Carolina delegation to the National Ad Club convention in Boston in August. Charleston delegates travel July 29 on the Clyde line. Secretary McKeand wired an invitation to Commissioner Watson to attend as representative of the state department of agriculture. Fifteen Charleston delegates and ten from other cities are expected. An Ad Club league is being formed in the state. Watson may attend, traveling by rail to save time.
Columbia July 26 The drainage act is entirely constitutional. An examination requested by Commissioner Watson convinced Attorney General Lyon and a formal opinion will be filed shortly. The opinion contrasts with earlier doubts and will resume projects for drainage districts that were held up awaiting constitutional clarity.
