New York digs out after a foot of snow cripples streets and transports as streetcars halt and winds gust off shore. The storm, first of the season, causes deaths and thousands in damage while leaving a trailing cleanup and unemployment concerns.
Bennettsville suffers the city’s worst blaze in history. The Matheson Block and surrounding homes burned, with losses estimated between 150000 and 200000 dollars. Insurance covers about half. The destruction hit major streets, hotels, railroad offices, drug company, lumber firm, and multiple offices and store rooms.
Fire burned the store rooms of C. E. Exum valued at 18000 and insured 11000 the store rooms of S. J. Pearson valued 3000 insured 1400 and two offices owned by Dr. W. J. Crosland valued about 2500 with partial insurance.
John G. Capers was sworn in today as commissioner of internal revenue in Washington. The oath ceremony and remarks highlighted his performance since taking temporary charge last summer and drew praise from treasury department officials.
Found a lighter about 40 feet long and 15 feet beam with boiler and engine, drifting seaward between North and South Islands. Owner can recover by paying expenses at C. L. Ford's grocery store. Reported by A. A. Smith.
