Fire destroys wholesale district in Columbia block
A January blaze in West Girvais street Columbia swept through the Gibbs Machinery Company and adjacent firms. Damage estimated between 825000 and 450000. The Gibbs, Columbia Machine and Iron Works, Southern States Supply, Armous & Co and Moffat B. Duprey warehouse were destroyed. Three residences and several stables burned. 18 to 20 autos in the Gibbs yard burned. All firms expect to continue or rebuild in the wholesale district.
