Comptroller General Sees Tax Inequities in Williamsburg Lands

In Kingstree Comptroller General Jones reports marked inequities in Williamsburg tax assessments. Lands sold at 400 to 800 dollars per acre show on tax books at 5 to 10 dollars per acre, while distant lands assessed at two dollars per acre have a ready market value of fifty dollars per acre. He accuses township and county boards of basing values on expected tax payments, shifting the burden to smaller holders.

The piece traces how Governor Tillman used a metaphorical pitchfork against Cleveland during the 1894 campaign and how cartoons, speeches, and a 1896 Chicago convention gift of a silver pitchfork solidified the nickname Pitchfork Ben. It notes the nickname’s evolution from insult to a respected Senate figure.
