In Georgetown a lack of Washington news is noted as five northbound mails are delayed by severe weather. The writer questions railroad reliability for troop transport in wartime, humorously noting a winter anomaly and predicting new cargo details from Liverpool via the next issue, with expected arrivals around December.
An tax law imposed a half cent per dollar on all purchases and sales of bullion specie bank notes and stocks by brokers inside and outside the state. Critics say sales tax is fairer than tax on stock value and would better protect revenue while avoiding penalizing merchants with fluctuating holdings.
The notice lists names of many residents with addresses and occupations as those with letters awaiting pickup at the Georgetown post office. It also records dissolutions of business partnerships and official notices from January 1840 involving Jacob Wayne Thomas L and Dr. WR T. Prior M.D. along with Jno Fl Lesesnek and M. I. Jan 1840.
An election will be held on the second Monday in January next the 13th day at Mrs Cribbs near Carvers Bay for Sheriff and Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas. Managers meet at the Court House Georgetown on the Thursday after to count votes and declare results. Polls open 10 A M close 4 P M at each location. Dic 14 Ma we rs.
