A child recalls Granpa in his blue uniform and medals honoring Memorial Day. He tells stories of wars and scars. the family places flowers, raises the Stars and Stripes, and remembers fallen soldiers with taps and drums. Memorial Day rituals and a longing for him to return are described.
Miss Sarah M Colton, prominent Galesburg resident, organized the Central Military Tract railway and helped establish the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line. Her nephew George Colton is Porto Rico’s governor. surviving brothers are Col. John B. Colton and Hon. Francis Colton.
At the state Congregational conference in Moline officers for the Association Directors and Directors-at-Large were elected across regions led by H A Rice Elgin Rev O A Petty Aurora and J R Smith Rock River. Following the Brotherhood Banquet in Springfield officers of the state Brotherhood were named led by N F Goodell and N L Johnson with Ira Q O Baker and B M Southgate noted. The Decatur I O R M Great Council elected Springfield as 1912 meeting site with officers including CO L Whitmer James F Brennan and Chas W Bisch and Trustees Frank Crook A P Capel and W P Aldridge.
A new Congregational church in Neponset was dedicated last Sunday. Rev. Frank G. Smith, former state legislator, gave an address, and Senator H. S. Magill of Princeton spoke. The modern frame structure sits on a stone foundation, replacing the 1863 building, with seating for about 250 and a basement with kitchen and Sunday school rooms. Memorial art glass windows decorate the auditorium.
C E Heaps, a well known local, has been awarded a state contract to build a $150 000 gymnasium for the agricultural college at Ames. The 100 by 400 foot structure will be among the largest in the Midwest and must be completed by September 1 1913. Heaps regards the award as a fortunate opportunity and will oversee the long construction period.
