The Red Cross Bloodmobile comes to Burton on October 31 from 10 am to 4 pm to collect whole blood for Armed Forces Civilian Defense and everyday civilian needs. Call Harrison Dietrich for registration. Also notes October Chamber of Commerce and Ladies Political Club meetings and local community updates.
Mrs L A Green and sons of Shelersville spent Friday with Mrs Kate Green. Mrs Collins of Warren visited Mrs Marilyn Powell and family, neighbors of the Powells in Windham. Mrs Bessie Knox visited her daughter in Willoughby. George and Mr Knox attended a Smorgasbord dinner. Mrs Dell Nash and Mrs Leland Gore joined Taylor Chapter D A R at a district meeting in Alliance. Sergeant Denver Hill returned home from Camp Atterbury for the weekend.
Brownie Troop No 7 met on Monday evening October 8 at Mrs Harold Reiters home. The group split into two patrols with Carol Pitchmann elected leader of patrol No 1 and Gail Reiter as assistant. Ellen Johnson led patrol No 2 with Sandra Jackson as assistant and Janeta Leyde chosen as troop secretary.
Geauga County's population climbs from 19 430 ten years earlier to 26 646 this year as per U S Census Bureau figures. Municipalities and townships listed with current and ten year ago counts include Chardon Burton Middlefield Huntsburg Newbury Parkman Russell Troy and others.
Malcolm G. Parker of Middlesfield was found guilty of being in physical control of a motor vehicle while intoxicated by Ray K. Thrasher. Parker received a $100 fine, costs, and a 30 day jail sentence suspended for two years. Cecil LaFon of Chardon was fined $100 and costs in police court by Mayor J. W. Moats for similar charges.
The Friday Literary club kicked off its season in Middlefield with a 7 p.m. dinner at the First Methodist church attended by 51 members and guests. Mrs. Gertrude Templin of Garretsville spoke on flower arrangement, leading groups to create bouquets. a winning cornucopia display featured brown and yellow chrysanthemums and ivy.
At Ruby Chapter No. 4 OES regular meeting in the Masonic hall on October 2 a program honored past matrons and patrons. Ella Carlson joined the life membership group. Autumn floral decorations graced the tables. On October 6 about 100 past matrons from District No. 4 attended a luncheon at the Chardon Masonic hall followed by a musical program. Edward Koemer spoke on the Eastern Star home in Dayton. The next chapter meeting is scheduled for October 16 with a special program after the regular session.
The Geauga Council No. 3304 held a September breakfast at St. Helen's Newbury with over half its members attending. Past Grand Knight James L. Esson spoke. Rev. Michael J. Murphy discussed church state separation for an Oct. 1 meeting. A Halloween party is set for Oct. 27 at St. Helen's Parish Hall Newbury.
Funeral services for Nellie B Miller were held Monday at the Chester Baptist church with Rev Barton Murray officiating. Miss Miller, born January 7 1876 in Chester, taught for over 40 years in local schools and was active as a church clerk and Sunday school teacher. She died October 5 aged 75 with burial in Chester cemetery. Survived by sister Mrs Floyd Beech and several nieces and nephews.
Smorgasbord event at First Methodist in Middlefield on Friday October 19. Supper from 5 to 8 pm. Adults $1.00 children 12 and under 50 cents. Tickets available from Guild chairmen or Edith Ritchie’s Store.
Geauga school children design posters for a Red Cross blood program contest. Open to all elementary junior high and senior pupils. Geauga Bankers Association offers three $5 prizes. Geauga Junior Red Cross adds two prizes of $2 and $1 per participating school. Judges named. Winners announced October 17 with county final October 19.
Of 54 buses inspected last week, 23 minor repairs needed and no bus deemed unserviceable. Auburn Burton Claridon and Middlefield schools posted perfect records. County superintendent Frank Schofield called it an excellent report on the transportation system.
Thomas Rowley Geauga county Civilian Defense director spoke at Thrasher House to the Aquarius club during the season’s second gathering. He urged stronger federal support for local units and noted upcoming first aid classes with Red Cross instructors.
John Ritondaro buys Broadhurst Funeral Home at 126 South Street and will rename it Ritondaro Funeral Home. The 26 year old licensed mortician trained at the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Arts and served in the Navy 1943 to 1946. His parents will join him in Chardon. former owner Broadhurst moves to Dover, Ohio.
The Progress club met at the Thrasher house last Monday evening with Mrs. Elsie DeGroft presiding. Local beauticians covered personal grooming with nail care, cosmetics, and skin care demonstrations. Richard Spangler urged simple neat hairdos and short hair for ease of upkeep.
Geauga County Tuberculosis and Health Association attendees gathered October 3 at Sunny Acres Cuyahoga County TB Hospital for a Rehabilitation Program discussion led by Eloise Young and Elizabeth Kardos. A tour of patient workshops followed with Mrs Myrtle Rodgers noting the insights shared by the presenters and the Geauga delegates listing attendees.
Seven adults join Auburn High School Adult Drivers Training under the Auburn Board of Education. Moore Auto Sales provides the car for eight hours of behind the wheel instruction plus classroom training in Dayton. Fees range from 20 to 25 dollars to cover instructor, maintenance, and insurance.
Bernice Ballard 73 widow of former Geauga County Sheriff Homer J. Ballard died Friday night at her 206 E King Street home after a nearly four year illness. Born in Montville she lived in Geauga County most of her life and served as county jail matron 1913 1917. Funeral rites were Monday at Burr Funeral Home with burial in Chardon cemetery.
West Geauga schools open with 58 first grade applicants. Chester hosts 40 new students and Russell 18 with Grace Cumming overseeing 27 of them. Mrs Kate Ridge teaches mixed first and second grade classes while Nancy Schroeder lists 20 more pupils in the Russell Building.
Four building permits were issued by Chardon Village in September. A. R. Calhoun for a loading platform and lean-to at Tilden Ave and Park St. Cuyanoga Abstract Title and Trust Co. for neon sign and modernization at 201 Main Street. George Haueter for a 24 by 22 garage on Claridon Rd. Frank Pokorny for a 32 by 24 frame house and garage on Grant St. No permits were issued by Chardon Township.
A reader urges fines for dumping on others property and for abandoning pets. He cites incidents despite No Dumping signs and sheriff efforts to identify offenders. He mentions offenders on West 135th Street Cleveland and government workers on Nelson Ledge Road Geauga County.
Mrs Edith M Brawn named deputy court clerk after approval by Clerk Donald Philips and County official William K Thomas. Brawn previously served as a deputy in the county recorder s office.
Hambden volunteers host the annual steak dinner on Oct. 18 with serving starting at 5 PM. Prices are $1.25 for adults and 75 cents for children under 12.
The Welk family held its first annual reunion at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W S Richards on Rt 6 with 37 members. A weiner roast and picnic supper followed. Officers elected: Charles Welk president and Mrs Jess Welk secretary.
Last Monday Geauga County sheriff deputies logged two major crashes on Route 322 near Route 44 and Route 6 near Route 86 involving six cars total. Names include Elwood Brown R D 1 Chardon June Glover R D 1 Middlefield George Reeder 10515 Bryant Ave John Kopilic 2906 E 91st St Cleveland Malcolm Parker Middlefield Richard Sukay Huntsburg and others. Three more injuries were reported on Auburn Center Road near Wilson Mills Road along with additional incidents on Route 44 and Route 87.
The Congregational Ladies Aid will host a roast pork supper on Wednesday evening October 24 starting at 5 o'clock. Proceeds support church activities and community outreach.
Sheriff Stuart Harland faces 48 active counts in a 48 count indictment after 24 counts were dismissed by Judge William K. Thomas. The case centers on alleged improper handling of George Gordon, former Pettibone Club manager, who served a 60 day sentence. The judge set a jury trial for November 7.

Mrs. B. C. Tiffany was the guest of honor at a family birthday dinner hosted by her daughter and son in law Mr. and Mrs. Norman Carlton in Middlefield. Also present were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gooding of Middlefield and Mr. and Mrs. Braden Tiffany with children of Painesville.
Chardon residents Mrs. Ward McDonald Mrs. Merton Strong Mrs. Josiah Temple and Mrs. H C Parsons attended a Columbus Republican Woman's clubs gathering staying at the Neil House. Grace Truman hosted the Deborah circle Tuesday evening with twelve members present and voted $50 to the church toward the circle's pledge.
