A telegram from Empire Oil to East Chicago officials sets Thursday as the deadline to decide on the Bald tract for a new refinery. If the council does not approve, Empire may close negotiations and pursue Hammond Gary sites, including a 383 acre tract, while considering pipe lines and docks at Buffington.
The Washington gym is sold out tonight for the Inland Bruins basketball game. The harbor section reports two frame buildings destroyed by fire and subzero weather causing icy streets and a wrecked truck. Washington High fans anticipate the Frankfort game this week.

Paris January 14 Marshal Ferdinand Foch allied commander in chief during World War I suffered a heart attack and was gravely ill at his home. A crisis period followed with six doctors present and strict visitor restrictions, as his condition remained life threatening. He is listed as still in active service but has limited recent military duties.
Mrs Steve Suchla of Gary identified her husband, 50 year old Sachla born in Germany, as the man found unconscious on Michigan Central tracks in Tolleston and later died at St Margaret s hospital Hammond. He left home Thursday in search of work and may have been hit by a train or fallen from a moving car. Funeral held at Emmerling chapel.
The Supreme Court declined to bar diverting water from Lake Michigan into Chicago's Sanitary Canal but ordered the diversion halted when Chicago can supply proper sewage disposal works.
Indiana lawmakers plan a law to authorize state police to arrest truck drivers bearing licenses of states that have engaged in truck wars against Indiana drivers. A committee led by Ross Greenwalt Mark W. Rhoades and H Curtis Bennett is drafting the measure in Indianapolis.

A car carrying Frank Brewer Theresa Masarik and Jack Meyers struck pedestrian Michael Wachlowski in Hammond near Indianapolis boulevard. Wachlowski died as the car rolled 300 feet and landed on Wolf River ice. Brewer faces manslaughter charges as Masarik and Meyers are hospitalized.
