The thermometer at the First Trust and Savings Bank building in Hammond shows 7 degrees Fahrenheit at 7 30 a m and 19 degrees at noon with snowy conditions reported at noon.
Indiana reports note Governor-elect Harry G Leslie plans to deliver the message to the 1920 legislature on Tuesday morning after inaugurations on Monday. Legislative clerks report heavy indexing of more than 200 bills for the 1929 biennial session and ongoing action by the General Assembly. Representative Gilbert Pleasants Lake named majority floor leader. Bloomington’s Claude Malott considered for caucus chair. Oscar A Ahlgren not seeking the post. Budget framing and committee selections occupy lawmakers’ time as Leslie pushes for funded institutional demands.
The East Chicago council debates a Baldwin tract refinery proposal tied to the Cary NS Universal Buffington project. Officials expect a decision at a special session as opponents challenge the plan. The site spans Hammond Gary Calumet river to Dunes highway and extends into Gary, with about a third in that district. Continued on Page Nine.
A survey details enlarged Prairie Line capacity of 100000 barrels daily feeding Whiting and East Chicago refineries and notes connections to Lockport Texas plant and Empire line. New capacity aims at 40000 barrels daily with 29000 to Texas plant and rest to Empire refinery, with completion over three years.

Purdue University's coed debating team defeated Northwestern in a forensic contest at Lafayette Indiana on the question of adopting the Equal Rights Amendment. Judge L R Norvelle credited Purdue for better analysis and audience contact. Debaters were Aileen Broadie Margaret Mace and Rose Marie Kronmiller from Purdue opposing Northwestern's Everison Waite Roberta Fairchild and Elymore Dolkart.
Mrs Opal Dell Smith files for divorce from Ralph FE Smith in Hammond Superior Court alleging husband teased her with stories of affairs and sided with his mother who ran the home. They married in 1927 and separated after New Year when he sent her to his mother's. furniture and husband vanished. She asks restoration of her maiden name Opal Cyphers.
The unconscious man, 40 to 45, was found on Michigan Central tracks a mile west of Toreston by Train No. 1 crew at 12:30. He had deep scalp wounds suggesting a fractured skull and possible fatal injuries. A note with $7 and the name S Suchala was found near the body. He was taken to St Margaret's hospital by ambulance. Police investigate the circumstances, suspecting he rode a freight train and fell or was struck by cars.
The Louisiana Supreme Court considers a sanity commission for Ada Bonner Le Boeuf and Dr. Thomas E. Dreher, both condemned to die, after defense briefs sought reversal of a trial ruling denying lunacy evaluation. The court met at 11 a.m. and retired for deliberation with no reappearance time set.
Grace Wood of Gary is charged with conspiring to have her husband Ralph A. Wood murdered. The Detroit widow, previously Mrs Grace Piankla, lived in Gary where she owned property and met Wood five years ago. She allegedly sought a divorce and remarriage after a supposed motive of jealousy emerged.
Chief J W Regan and Detective Sere Martin Zarkovich doubt Mrs Sterling’s tale of two armed negros robbing her 3428 Guthrie Street store of 1400 dollars. Officers passing by reportedly saw nothing and phone logs show the line was open briefly, while Sterling had insurance for cash losses. Regan continues inquiry to verify the alleged robbery.
Ten passengers remained seriously injured after a collision of two street cars in Chicago. The crash left many bruised as after theater crowds filled both cars. Joseph Wein, 42, a manufacturer, suffered a skull fracture and possible internal injuries, while George Geatnos, a medical student, had an arm and leg fracture and brain concussion.
A spectacular downtown fire in Washington began in the Dulin and Martin store and caused damage estimated at $400,000. Authorities feared the blaze could spread to the business district as flames raged through storefronts today.
President Coolidge sent to the senate the nomination of William John Cooper of California to be commissioner of education. He would succeed John Tigert who resigned to become dean of the University of Florida.
The reapportionment bill based on the 1930 census will cost Indiana and 16 other states representation while 11 states gain seats. Missouri faces the largest loss with three House members. California gains six. Other winners include Michigan with four and Ohio Texas New Jersey with two each. Losses include Indiana Iowa Kentucky Mississippi and many others.
John B. Bellamy, a Hammond chauffeur, files for divorce from Blanche Bellamy in Hammond Superior Court alleging she claimed a right to “run around with other men” and brought pictures of lovers home. He says she neglected home duties after their July 9 1909 marriage and March 20 1924 separation.
Sub zero temperatures and blizzards crippled Chicago and Midwestern towns. Two train wrecks killed two and injured over a dozen as snow and ice toppled trains near Belleville and Lanworthy. Bridges of relief opened as charities and police sheltered hundreds of homeless, while cold sank scores below zero across Minnesota Wisconsin and North Dakota. harsher conditions forecast tomorrow.
A man found along the Michigan Central tracks west of Tolleston died at St. Margaret's hospital from a skull fracture and brain concussion. A small store book with seven dollars contained the name S Suchala, but Hammond Gary and East Chicago police could not confirm residence. Authorities believe he fell from a freight train and was unconscious before death.
Mrs. Flory Gray of 3833 Fir Street Indiana Harbor is divorcing James Gray after a separation on a day she entertained husband No. 2 while he worked in steel mills to support the children of husband No. 1. The couple married May 19 1919 and have five children.
Charles A. Lindbergh prepares for a 2 p.m. takeoff at Mitchell Field Long Island in a tri motor Ford monoplane for a coast to coast air mail route inspection. Casey Jones will accompany as flying mate on the journey and Lindbergh chairs the technical committee of Transcontinental Air Transport. Los Angeles slated as Pacific end, route to carry passengers and mail.
Earl S. Griffin filed suit in Hammond Superior Court against the City of Hammond seeking 2200 dollars back salary for probation officer service. Griffin was appointed December 22, 1927 and began work January 1, 1928, claiming he worked the full year and is owed his compensation.
A powerful black powder bomb rocked the Martin Hotel on North Clark Street causing near total damage to a cigar store in front. The blast sent patrons into panic and was linked to a gambling war. Police noted a handbook operation in the rear of the wrecked shop. The venue also sold prize fight tickets and served as a sporting rendezvous.
Mrs Mary Bochnowski a 45 year old midwife from Indiana Harbor was arrested on charges she performed a criminal operation linked to the death of Mary Punak a 35 year old mother of five from Robertsdale The victim died in a Chicago hospital after the January 5 procedure and Mrs Punak named Bochnowski as the operator An inquest is set for January 19 and Bochnowski was released on a 5000 bond pending the coroner inquiry.
Washington January 12 The Senate legislative situation was reviewed at a White House breakfast hosted by President Coolidge. Guests included Senators Fess McMasters Watson Moses Reed Bingham Brookhart Capper Nye Van denberg Pine Smoot Ashurst Barkley Fletcher McKellar Ransdall George and Jerry Shipstead as well as former labor figure Smoot.
Myora T. Herrick ambassador to France leaves New York aboard the He De France bound for Cherbourg after a period of convalescence from bronchitis.
Bloomington Indiana January report states Walter Bradfute editor of the Bloomington Telephone is in critical condition at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis after a month long flu attack. He has run the Telephone for over fifty years.
Jane Whiting 22 died after blood poisoning contracted by Bran 106 Indianapolis boulevard. Death occurred at St Mary hospital. Survived by Sverzvich and his father in Pittsburgh Pa. Funeral services held this morning at 10 oclock.
Chicago reports John R. Thompson Chain Restaurant Corp buys Henrici company’s opera tion, preserving Henrici identity as a precursor to a new chain. The Henrici property transfers for 20,000 Thompson shares, valued near 1.2 million dollars.
Fire gutted the downtown Fort Worth First Baptist Church led by Dr. J Frank Norris as city workers battled flames to limit spread. The fire caused extensive damage to the edifice in the early hours with Norris previously involved in a high profile trial.
