Gary Works of the Illinois Steel Company plans to move thousands of tons of steel products by water to cut freight costs. Docks at Gary Harbor are being remodeled and additional facilities added to support lake shipments. Water transport at the Gary plant was used years ago and may resume for outgoing steel orders once improvements are complete.
