Judge Martin Smith rules in favor of Woodmark Realty Co in land claims suit against government. Fireworks explosion leaves 15 killed and 30 injured, authorities report. Temperature in Hammond 36°F at 7:30 am rising to 47°F by noon with fair weather at midday.
Three people were injured in two Calumet City automobile accidents last night. John Cavan and his daughter Eileen were severely injured when their car hit a snow bank on 147th street and rolled twice. They were taken to St. Margaret's hospital after returning from a church dinner. A second injury involved 16 year old Lawrence Hoffman who suffered a scalp wound and dislocated shoulder after stepping into the path of a northbound car on Wentworth Avenue. A later morning collision occurred between a truck driven by E G Warner and a car driven by Joseph Panicki on Lincoln Avenue and 154th Place.
In New York a blast shattered streets near Broadway injuring a policeman and killing three horses as gas mains exploded between 20th and 31st streets. Thousands evacuated and hundreds of offices lost telephone service while cause remained unknown.
Prosecutor Oliver Starr and aides push that trustee Erick Lund filed false claims to defraud the North township poor relief fund. Evidence spans July to September 1928 showing disputed bills and testimony from local residents and doctors. Grand larceny charges were filed against Avald Schwartz and Isiah Norward for wholesale metal thefts. Ben and Harold Goldberg of East Chicago were named as buyers by the suspects, who confessed after a Hammond police roundup tracing thefts from railroad yard brass journals and iron. Norward admitted paying eight dollars a ton for scrap iron and selling about fifty tons, while Schwartz melted lead to up the brass value. Police tip from Officer Bert Nichols led to the arrests.
Charles Cunningham of 1942B Michigan avenue Hammond was struck by a vampire motorist on Kennedy avenue near the Grand Calumet river. He was picked up by Edgar Armstrong of 4586 California street at 11 o clock and rushed to St Catherine's hospital. Cunningham was semi conscious this morning and gave his name to hospital attaches after leaving work at the Graselli Chemical company.
Senator Charles S Deneen Republican candidate for reelection winds up his primary drive in Southern Cook County with a mass meeting at Jaranowski hall Calumet City. The event features speakers including Francis Peterson William Busse George Miller Frank Kriz and John Jaranowski among others. The meeting marks the final big push before Tuesday’s primary.
A. Murray Turner of Hammond will not attend the Indiana commission meeting in Indianapolis on Saturday regarding 1933 Chicago world’s fair plans. He said as a commission member he has no interest in the discussion at this time.
Clifford A. Evans is captured after a woman’s name and a bleeding heart tattoo on his wrist linked him to kidnaping cases in Hammond. Sergeants Lute and Funk arrested him as he left 1411 California Avenue. Evans admitted one holdup of Miss Gladys Miller at Hohman and Russell street.
Thomas R. Thomas, 37, a member of Afton and Thomas real estate firm, died suddenly at his Munster home after presenting with a cold. He was widely known in the Calumet region. funeral plans await his brother from Cleveland. His wife Frieda Windling Thomas is a niece of Mrs. Peter W. Meyn.
A fire of unknown origin early today damaged the Louis Weiss hardware store in Crown Point Indiana and nearby businesses on the Square. Discovered around five o clock the blaze gutted the building, ruined most stock, and caused smoke and water damage to the rest while investigators looked for the cause.
A charging affidavit accuses Indianapolis printing salesman Albert B. Snyder of giving DeKalb County Republican commissioner Nichols Funk a $100 bribe to influence printing contracts for North State Publishing Co. Snyder was released on $1,000 bond. Funk was not indicted. Snyder says he is the victim of a political frameup and both men will be exonerated.
The East Chicago board of public safety ordered the immediate discharge of Police Detective Vincent Crawford after he faced six charges. Crawford's resignation offered at trial was ignored as the board pursued public disclosure. Witnesses described drunken misconduct at Inland hotel and a 339 LelIst street candy store incident.
In Whiting on April 3 John Benak Jr was fined 100 dollars and costs with 60 days suspended for violating state liquor laws though he claimed no liquor was sold at 900 Schrage avenue. Herman Emkin was acquitted after it emerged he ran a rear restaurant unrelated to the front soft drink parlor. Martin Zorich, at 643 Schrage avenue, was also acquitted. police evidence failed due to lack of a search warrant and uncertain sighting of liquor.
Richmond Indiana April 3 William Shinn 37 turned on gas burners in his mother's kitchen causing his death in what investigators call a suicide long weeks without work were believed to have affected his mind authorities said Shinn lived with his mother on the citys north side prior to the tragedy
Mrs. Ethel Startsman wife of William Sk Startsman a prominent Hammond resident died suddenly Tuesday night at her Brantwood Highland home after long illness. She had felt better earlier that day and listened to radio before dying within an hour. Husband a traveling salesman could not be reached until Wednesday evening at a Toledo hotel.
Goldie Harrison a Chicago woman was arrested for public intoxication after causing a disturbance on a Chicago Gary bus. The Whiting City court ruled that a person intoxicated on a public utility cannot be convicted, and dismissed the case.
