The Cannon Prohibition Bill was killed by the Senate last Saturday afternoon by a 12 to 6 vote. The committee report favored the bill with Wyde Kuchler Marks Badger Bullen Hulaniski Seely Levy B X Smith J Y Smith Stookey and Gardner backing it. Opposing the committee report were Brinkerhoff Burton Horsley Miller Williams and Wilson.
Mise Clara Clark and Mr Edmund Nohr united in marriage at the Logan Temple on Wednesday. Clark is a Garland area daughter with many friends. Nohr is a popular Logan youth, son of Mr and Mrs C J Nohr. They will reside in Logan for the present.
Orvil Smith sued R F Baxter to recover steel climbers and related items. Five witnesses testified and a jury trial was requested. Jurors Eph Coombs A B Manasa O W Miller and Owen Barber served. Verdict returned for the plaintiff.
Letter from Elder Clarence Austin reporting arrival in Rotterdam February 2 1909 and assignment to Nijmegen Arnhem conference. Notes Dutch customs wooden shoes a street car drawn by a lean horse and Nijmegen’s 6400 inhabitants. Describes mission success and friendly saints awaiting visits.
Mrs. Lottie B. Smith hosted the Ladies' Self Culture Club with 18 members, 12 babies and two visitors. Bertha Campbell presided as president, readings from Mr. Charles Wells were shared, Ethel Lewis was named to an amusement committee for three months, and Mrs. Levi J. Samson read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Refreshments followed and plans were made for March lith.
A fine son was born to the wife of Chief Chemist H. C. Cutler of the Utah Idaho Sugar Co. on Washington's Birthday, and a charming daughter was born to the wife of Dr. C. W. Richards Jr. on the same day. All concerned doing fine.
Dr R J Smith is named health officer for District No 3 including Deweyville Riverside and surrounding areas. Contagious diseases must be reported to him along with Albert Simmons and Joe Johnson. Two scarlet fever cases are quarantined at Riverside. school closed to assess outbreak.
Items of interest from Garland and nearby towns include visits by F Fonlger of Ogden and L Winters to Ogden, Mosiah Evans traveling to Salt Lake, and a stockholders meeting of the BR. M. & P. Co. In town. Merchant Chris Peterson of Snowville did business in Garland, and a new Garland Dramatic Co. run of reversals was noted with a forthcoming big announcement. The Garland public school welcomes Miss Cornelia Brooke of St George as the new teacher, as Mrs Burns of Fielding and Mrs Ursel Rose of Garland spent time at the Salt Lake Temple.
A mix of community items notes Mrs. Trunnell buying A. J. Hawks home and plans to move in, Frank Devey buying a town residence, Joseph Ellason selling to Hawks, and neighbors attending BRY College events. A mining venture near Garland in Box Elder County plans a stock issue by March first, offering non assessable stock at three dollars per share from Garland offices, after tunneling and surface indications show lead and silver with gold. The piece also mentions road conditions, birthday observances, illnesses, and local travels.
Notice announces that starting Monday February 15 for three weeks the Utah-Idaho Sugar Co. will contract with beet growers in Garland Utah for the season. In Deweyville Brigham City Oleen N Stohl presided over the marriage of C J Dewey of Tremonton and Tony Eggilston of Star Valley Wyoming. Dewey works for Farmers Cash Union Tremonton and Eggilston is a Star Valley native. A reception followed at the groom's mother's home Mary Dewey. Ward conference was held with the Stake Presidency present. George A Pierson was released as second counselor to Bishop Dewey and M A Chidester was sustained as successor.
