Starving Stock Protest Targets Johnson Ranch

Mrs H Schneider of Garland alerted the Humane Society to severe animal starvation at Johnson's Garland area ranch. Nine cattle died and about 100 head remained alive, with some feeding on sagebrush bark as authorities prepared a warrant for Johnson and his wife. Dr Beatty ordered feeding, while the attorney general warned of prosecutions.

County Commissioners Meeting Minutes and Actions

County commissioners met with full board present on February 7. Licenses granted include a free candy store license for Mrs. Anne E Hall of West Portage. Road issues from Salt Wells Valley and Junction were referred to committees for investigation. Bond for East Garland JP Wim Adams returned for completion. Year 1909 financials and January clerk, recorder, auditor reports and sheriff December-January reports were accepted. J Edward Gibbs appointed deputy assessor for Portage. Court House bids reviewed including Sackett and Hansen. Sackett’s oak finish bid accepted unanimously over fir. Cement culverts approved to replace decayed wood. Miscellaneous road site changes referred to Rohwer for investigation. Deputy road commissioner R W Baty appointment confirmed. No settlement reached on unspecified agreement. clerk to request one rock crusher and dump wagons. Adjourned with claims allowed.

Fire destroys Than Marble store and post office in Deweyville

A Thursday night blaze in Deweyville wiped out Than Marble's combined store and Uncle Sam post office, with losses near eight thousand dollars partly insured. Also noted: a marriage between Miss Myrtle Loveland and Mr Hiram Burbank in the Logan temple and family updates including a newborn for Mr and Mrs Mart Gardner. Collinston Tops Garland In Close Saturday Basketball

A spirited game at Manausa hall Saturday night saw Collinston defeat Garland 20 to 18 in a tough matchup. Bert Swinyard led scorers while Principal W M Lillywhite served as referee as Collinston’s Logan College drills contrasted with Garland’s amateur squad.

Academy Masquerade in Brigham Hailed a Grand Night

The St. Valentine masquerade at the Academy in Brigham Monday night drew high praise as characters outclassed previous events. Special music featured Prof Glen of Ogden as 1st violinist. Cash prizes of 2.50 were awarded to Mrs Serena Hansen Indian Squaw and John Youngquist Nunn. Mr and Mrs C O Anderson and daughter Olive attended and helped provide the music.

Justice Smith Court Dockets Three Civil Cases

Justice Burdett Smith’s court Wednesday heard three cases. Dr Parkinson of Logan sued Chris Hademark for 25 dollars for professional services and won by default. Thompson Land and Live Stock Co sued Wm and Annie Johnson on demurrer overruled. T W Sandall sued Wm and Annie Johnson for 150 dollars on a bond in replevin and won for the plaintiff.
