Bush courts three U.N. Security Council allies
President Bush spoke by phone with China’s Jiang Zemin, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and France’s Jacques Chirac in attempts to win backing for Iraqi action against Saddam Hussein. The calls, totaling 30 minutes, aimed to persuade but yielded no clear consensus. Chirac urged UN Security Council decision, while Putin signaled possible political solution. Jiang discussed world affairs but no word on Saddam. Bush to send diplomats and address UN on Sept. 12, seeking a resolution or deadline for weapons inspectors.
