Senator Sam Brownback called for discretion in addressing Iraq and suggested nonmilitary pressure first. He criticized Saddam Hussein as an evil ruler who used weapons of mass destruction against Iraqis and urged supporting anti-Saddam factions in the north and south to loosen his grip. He favored an Afghan style approach with potential congressional approval before any invasion.
Battery A of the 1st Battalion 161st Field Artillery will mobilize for Operation Noble Eagle, sending 65 guardsmen from Garden City and Liberal to Fort Riley. The unit, on alert since 9-11, trains at Fort Riley until at least Sept 20 and then guards the base gates in a one year mission with possible extension, as families face separations.
Theresa A. Treadway, 52, of Satanta died in a one-vehicle crash on Seward County Road 1 near the Satanta cutoff about 5 10 p.m. Tuesday. The 1988 Ford Aerostar she drove left the road, overcorrected, rolled 1 1/4 times, and she was found unbelted in a field. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three men were involved in separate Wednesday night attacks in Finney County labeled gang related by the sheriff. Barlando Powell 34 Jorge Gonzales 18 and Ignacio Renoso 24 of Garden City were in a black Pontiac Grand Am at 140 S Farmland Rd when an altercation began. One man was shot in the head and another struck with a pool cue. despite the violence, no one suffered serious injuries.
About 6:30 p.m. a confrontation ended with a pool cue shattering a car window and injuring Powell who required stitches. Witnesses said a gun was displayed but no shots fired.
