Protections extended to gays in Kansas state government
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed an executive order broadening the state anti discrimination rule to include sexual orientation and gender identity. The change covers about 25 000 of 41 000 employees and requires harassment prevention programs in agencies under the governor. Sebelius backs a legislative proposal extending housing and private employment protections to gays and lesbians. Activists applauded as she signed, while opponents called the move radical and warned of possible impacts on civil rights.
