Two-shift option not popular in Garden City

Garden City High School Facility Study Group discussed a two-shift day to ease crowding at a campus built for 1,500 but housing roughly 2,000 students. The plan would also address inadequate labs, rooms, gymnasiums, and other facilities while aiming to lower class sizes and remove mobile trailers. The group plans to present one of 10 options to the USD 457 Board of Education in October, hoping to resolve capacity and facility challenges.

Ruling preserves in-state tuition for immigrants in Kansas

A Denver court panel ruled that students paying out-of-state tuition cannot challenge Kansas 2004 law allowing some illegal immigrants to pay in-state rates. The decision focused on standing, not merits, after a trial court found no concrete injury. The ruling leaves in-state tuition policy unresolved on the merits.

Farm bill subsidies face tougher limits says Johanns

U S Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns urged tighter subsidy rules arguing the current $1 million income cap is too high and should be lowered to exclude earners over $250 000. President Bush backs stronger payment limits, with about 7 000 farms affected by the higher threshold and Farm Bureau leaders opposing caps. The 2008 2012 budget would total 299 billion dollars with nutrition programs making up much of current spending. Clarence Thomas a 52 year old farmer listened to Johanns.
