Next El Nino could strike again say UN scientists
A UN panel warns the next El Nino, likely every two to seven years, could bring severe global weather. It urges regional cooperation, early leadership involvement, risk mapping, and education to move from awareness to action. Peru’s proactive task force and World Bank funding are cited as models. Park Service readies seven controlled fires in Western parks
The National Park Service approved seven tightly controlled prescribed burns to reduce wildfire risk in Sequoia Kings Canyon Yosemite and Lake Mead areas. Fires could start before year end in remote sites with ample crews and equipment on standby. The plan follows last year’s Bandelier disaster and aims to safely restore prescribed burning in a three stage program.
