Record sunflower crop boosts Kansas farmers harvest
Kansas farmers report a record sunflower yield with forecasters predicting production to more than double from last year. Corn and sorghum yields also exceed expectations as 78 percent of corn and 41 percent of sunflowers are in, amid mild October weather. Northwestern farmer Brian Baalman notes the crop rebound after drought, with sunflowers earning higher per-acre returns than corn. Sunflowers total 277,000 harvested acres, up from last year, while overall corn production climbs to 429 million bushels due to more harvested acres. Wheat planting is 83 percent complete as farmers shift toward corn and sunflowers.
