State tightens crackdown on water overpumping by dairies and towns
State officials continue penalties for overpumping water rights with fines up to 10 000 and possible revocation. The list includes eight western Kansas dairy operations led by the Boersma Gray County dairy and Ritzema Rodenhuis in Kearny County. Cities Junction City and Elmdale also appear with 2012 violations. The crackdown adds 1 000 fines for second offenses and 20 acre feet water-use reductions in 2015, with a potential water-right suspension or revocation for third and fourth offenses. Water-use penalties now appear on county records to warn buyers.
