Finney County water study links settlers to aquifer decline
Paper by Kansas State University anthropologist at Finney County Historical Museum examines the High Plains Aquifer decline in southwest Kansas. The Finney County Rangers and Grangers study cites 58 to 480 foot well depths, reduced flow from 1400 to 400-500 gallons per minute, and fears for future irrigation. Interviews with 12 ranching families reveal German and English origins, Homestead Act ties, and a shift from dry land farming to modern technology and urban migration.

Tour guide Brian Nelson promotes restoration of the State Theatre and nearby Windsor Hotel, both on the National Register, to draw tourists and support downtown revival. The June tours will run the third Thursday each month at 7 p.m., tickets at the box office or The Arts Center. The 1929 State Theatre, remodeled in 1967, hosted early films and live shows, with plans to restore its historic features and return it to full function for community use.
