Ex-NY cop stops hijacker on Nassau flight ramp
An ex Manhattan police officer overpowered a hijacker aboard an Eastern Airlines jet at Nassau clearing $500,000 and three hostages. Pilot John O’Neill tackled the suspect as he walked toward two bags under car lights, aided by U.S. customs and Nassau police. The hijacker, James Bennett, was taken to a Nassau jail to await U.S. marshals. The hijacking began near New York LaGuardia after a Miami origin flight with 132 passengers. Bennett claimed explosives and sought IRA contact, a half million dollars, and a car with an English speaking driver and a woman hostage. The crew and passengers were safely released except for the hijacker and those involved in the capture.
