Court upholds mandatory beef ad fees in government speech ruling

The Supreme Court ruled that mandatory $1 per head cattle fees funding the Beef: It's What's For Dinner campaign can be compelled, a decision favoring the government over ranchers and other producers who opposed the program. Justice Scalia said the message is government speech, while Justice Souter dissented, arguing funding speech should be accountable.

Carla Algrim described strong sales at the Church of the Nazarene booth where tie rocks bierocks pigs in a blanket and cabbage rolls drew crowds at Stevens Park. Youth volunteers and the high school cafeteria helped prepare foods as organizers fund camp trips and local church activities. The event felt festival like despite hot weather with a downtown setting and a cooperative, community mood.
