Kansas Legislature Approves 13.8 Billion Budget Plan
The Legislature approves a 13.8 billion dollar budget for the coming year with a 0.5 percentage point sales tax increase to 6.3 percent in 2010 to restore revenues. The plan cuts education and social programs, preserves key university and airline subsidies, and keeps the state neurological institute open while considering vetoes on arts and public broadcasting funding. The budget also programs 34 million in new bonds for the Statehouse renovation and forecasts possible extra funds from May and June receipts.
